In the last chapters of the book, Gregory and Mimi return home. About a month later they got a call saying that Oma had died. Greg put his Walkman into the coffin. This shows how much he really had changed because he was willing to give his Walkman away, even though it was a great comfort to him. It would seem he no longer had the need to isolate himself.
Pauline asked Gregory how he was. He said he was fine. "Nothing had changed at home………I must have changed, I guess." Page 136.
All that had happened in Gregory's time away from home had changed him from being sad and depressed to the point of thinking about suicide to being "fine".
